How to Annotate Diagrams
This article explains how to annotate a diagram so that you can add notes, shapes, and lines to help communicate your structure.
Before You Start
You'll need an existing diagram open. If you haven't created one yet, see How to Create Diagrams.
Adding an Annotation
- Click the dropdown button next to the Line button.
- A panel appears with four options: Line, Rectangle, Ellipse, and Text. Select the one you want.
- The Line button updates to reflect your selection.
- Click the button — it changes colour to indicate the annotation tool is active.
- Add the annotation to your diagram:
- For Line, Rectangle, and Ellipse — click and drag to draw the shape where you want it.
- For Text — click on the diagram where you want the text to appear.
- To resize or reposition an annotation, click on it and adjust as needed.
Styling or Deleting an Annotation
- Right-click the annotation.
- A panel appears with styling options. You can also delete the annotation from here.
Deleting All Annotations
- Click the dropdown button next to the Line button.
- Select Delete all.
Hiding Annotations
- Click the Settings button.
- Navigate to the Display tab.
- Turn off the switch for Annotations.
Annotations that are hidden will not appear when you export the diagram.
What You'll See
Annotations are saved automatically — you don't need to click Lock Layout to preserve their position.
Tip: If you have an annotation type selected but are unable to draw, check that Annotations is switched on under Settings → Display.
