How to Create a Scenario
This article explains how to create a Scenario so that you can model proposed structures or restructures without affecting your live data in StructureGram.
Before You Start
You'll need an existing diagram to build your Scenario on. This Diagram becomes the Base Diagram — the starting point your Scenario is built from.
Steps
- Open the Diagram you want to use as your Base Diagram.
- Click Create Scenario.
- In the form that appears, give your Scenario a name.
- If you're modelling a multi-step Scenario, you'll also be prompted to name the first step. If you leave it blank, the step will take the Scenario name.
- Click Create Scenario.
You'll be taken into your Scenario (or the first step of it). It looks identical to your Base Diagram, with one difference: a green border around the canvas, indicating you're in a Scenario.
What You'll See
Once inside a Scenario, you can add, edit, or remove entities and relationships freely — none of your changes will affect your Base Diagram or live data.
To help you track what's changed, StructureGram highlights changes visually:
- New entities have a green dotted border.
- New relationships appear as green dotted lines.
- Removed entities and relationships become faded. If you create a next step in the Scenario, removed items disappear entirely from that step — but added items carry over in their green dotted state.
You can customise these Scenario mode colours from Scenario Settings.
To return to your Base Diagram at any time, click Base Diagram in the top right of the Scenario view.
Working with Multiple Scenarios
You can create multiple Scenarios for the same Base Diagram. To view and switch between them:
- From the diagram, click the down arrow next to Create Scenario and select the Scenario you want to open.
- From the Diagrams page, click Scenarios for the relevant diagram.
