Legacy Diagram Layout and Routing Options

StructureGram's diagram layout and link routing was rebuilt so that Direct and Tracks routing — the two options offered by default — automatically re-route links as you move entities. As part of that change, some older options were retired from the menus new diagrams see.

Nothing about an existing diagram changes because of this. If a diagram already uses one of the options described below, it keeps working exactly as it did, with no forced migration. This article explains what was retired, why your diagram or organisation might still show it, and how to get it back for new diagrams if you need to.

What Was Retired

Compact layout

The Layout Engine setting used to offer a choice between Standard and Compact. Compact has been retired — new diagrams only offer Standard, and for most diagrams the Layout Engine section no longer appears in the panel at all, since there's nothing to choose between.

Older Standard routing options

Under Link Routing, the Standard layout engine used to offer several routing styles. The current default options — Direct and Tracks — replace three older ones, which now appear (where still available) labelled as legacy:

  • Curves (legacy)
  • Tracks (legacy)
  • Direct (legacy)

These predate the automatic re-routing behaviour: moving an entity did not automatically update the connected links the way Direct and Tracks do today.

Flex routing

Flex link routing — keeping entity positions fixed and only refreshing link routes — is also retired from the default menu, shown as Flex (legacy) where it still appears. Direct and Tracks now include Flex's core benefit as standard behaviour: your entities stay where you put them, and their links re-route automatically. See Flex Link Routing for the full mechanics of that mode, still accurate for diagrams that use it.

Why You Might Still See These Options

A diagram never loses an option it's already using. If a diagram is currently on Compact, or on one of the legacy routing modes, its Layout Engine or Link Routing panel will show that option alongside the current ones — so nothing about the diagram is stranded.

An organisation can also have one or more of these options granted back for new diagrams, at the tenancy level. If yours has been, every diagram in your organisation will offer the granted option in its dropdown, not just diagrams already using it.

For Admins: Getting a Legacy Option Back

If your organisation wants the Compact layout, or one of the legacy Standard routing options, available for new diagrams again, email help@structuregram.com.au and let us know which option(s) you'd like enabled. We can turn them on for your organisation.
