Create Group Option Missing
Context and Why This Exists
If you cannot see Create Group on the Groups page, your access level probably allows you to work inside existing groups but not create new ones.
This is expected when your organisation gives you Member - Edit access. Member - Edit lets you edit group data and diagrams in groups you can access, but it does not let you create new groups.
What Permission Is Needed
To create a new group, you need one of these access levels:
| Access level | Can create groups? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Admin - Tenancy | Yes | Full organisation administration. |
| Member - Group Admin | Yes | Member access with group administration rights. |
| Member - Edit | No | Can edit data in accessible groups, but cannot create groups. |
| Member - View | No | Can view accessible groups. |
| Member - No Baseline Access | No | Only sees groups granted directly or through a team. |
How to Fix It
Ask a user with Admin - Tenancy access to update your role.
They can usually do this from Account > Team:
- Go to Account > Team.
- Find your user in the team member list.
- Change your role to Member - Group Admin if you should be able to create groups.
- Save or confirm the change.
- Return to Groups and refresh the page if needed.
After your access is updated, the Create Group button should appear on the Groups page.
If Your Firm Wants a Different Default
Some firms prefer staff with Member - Edit access to be able to create groups. By default, StructureGram treats group creation as a group administration permission, so Member - Edit does not include it.
If your organisation wants Member - Edit to include group creation, contact StructureGram support. This is a firm-level permission policy decision.
Troubleshooting
I can edit entities and diagrams, but I still cannot create groups
Most likely cause: you have Member - Edit access.
Fix: ask an Admin - Tenancy user to upgrade you to Member - Group Admin.
The Create Group button was there before, but now it is gone
Most likely causes:
- Your organisation role was changed.
- You switched to another organisation where you have a lower access level.
- Your account is viewing a restricted or limited context.
Fix:
- Check that you are in the correct organisation.
- Ask an Admin - Tenancy user to confirm your role.
- Ask them to set your role to Member - Group Admin if you need to create groups.
I am an administrator but still cannot create a group
Most likely causes:
- You may be an admin in a different organisation.
- The organisation may have reached a subscription or group limit.
Fix:
- Check that you are in the correct organisation.
- Try refreshing the Groups page.
- If the button appears but creation fails, check whether a group limit message appears.
Best Practice
Use Member - Edit for users who should edit client data but should not create new client groups.
Use Member - Group Admin for managers or staff who are trusted to create groups and manage group-level access.
Use Admin - Tenancy only for users who should manage organisation-wide settings, billing, team membership, and access.
