Files and Links on Diagrams
Documents attached to an entity or a relationship are visible on the diagram itself, so you can see which parts of a structure have paperwork behind them — and open that paperwork without leaving the canvas.
This applies to ownership diagrams. Family tree diagrams do not show attachment markers.
The Paperclip Marker
An entity that has at least one file or link shows a paperclip marker (📎) in a small rounded box at its bottom-left corner. A relationship shows one at the end of its label — for example, Trustee Of 📎.
- The marker appears only when there is something attached. An entity with no files or links shows nothing, so a clean diagram stays clean.
- It reflects the current count. Attach or remove a document and the diagram updates without a reload.
- Screen readers announce the number of items, for example "3 files or links".
The marker tells you something exists. It does not indicate the document type or how many items there are visually — open the menu to see that.
Opening a File or Link from the Canvas
Right-click the paperclip marker to open the Files & links menu.
The menu lists everything attached to that entity or relationship, showing each item's title and its document type. Each row is marked according to what it is:

Right-clicking the marker opens the attachment menu instead of the usual right-click menu for that entity or relationship. To reach the normal menu, right-click anywhere else on the node or link.
Close the menu with Escape, or by clicking anywhere outside it.
If the list can't be loaded — a dropped connection, for example — the menu shows an error with a Retry button rather than an empty list, so a failure is never mistaken for "nothing attached".
Read-Only and Shared Diagrams
The marker and its menu work on read-only diagrams, including ones shared with you. Being unable to edit a diagram does not prevent you opening the documents behind it.
Access is still governed by the underlying permissions:
- Downloading an uploaded file requires permission to view the entity or relationship it belongs to.
- Opening a saved link takes you to another system — SharePoint, Google Drive or similar — which applies its own access rules. StructureGram controls who can see the link, not who can open what it points to.
Managing Documents
The canvas menu is for reaching documents, not managing them. To add, replace, re-type or remove a file or link, open the entity or relationship and use its Files & links section:
Troubleshooting
No paperclip appears on an entity I know has documents
Check you are on an ownership diagram — family tree diagrams do not show these markers. If you have just attached the document, the count updates on its own; if it still doesn't appear, refresh the diagram.
Right-clicking opens the wrong menu
You are most likely just outside the marker. It is a small box at the bottom-left corner of the node; right-clicking the node body opens the standard entity menu instead.
A link opens to a "not found" or permission error
The document has moved or you lack access in the system that stores it. StructureGram stores the URL exactly as entered and never fetches it, so it cannot tell you in advance that a link has gone stale. Update the URL from the link's Edit details action.
