How to Save and Apply Diagram Settings

Context and Why This Exists

Saving a preferred setup lets you apply the same Diagram Settings to other Ownership Diagrams without configuring every option again. Saved settings are shared across your current organisation.

For details about what is included, see Saved Diagram Settings.

Before You Start

To save a new setting, you need one of these permission levels:

  • Admin - Tenancy
  • Member - Group Admin

Other organisation members can apply settings that have already been saved.

Open a standard Ownership Diagram rather than a Scenario.

Save the Current Diagram Settings

  1. Open the Ownership Diagram that has the setup you want to reuse.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select the Saved settings button with the small two-slider icon at the top of the panel.
  4. Select Save current.
  5. Enter a clear, unique name in Name.
  6. Select Save.

StructureGram confirms that the setting was saved for the organisation. The button's tooltip shows the matching saved setting name.

Note: Saving captures the current supported Diagram Settings. It does not save Entity positions, link routes, annotations, Entity scope, Styling, or Auto Layout choices.

Apply Saved Settings

  1. Open the Ownership Diagram you want to update.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select the Saved settings button with the small two-slider icon.
  4. Select the name you want to apply.
  5. Wait for Applying settings… to finish.

The diagram updates immediately. A confirmation identifies the setting that was applied.

The applied values are then part of that diagram's own settings. Later changes to the shared saved setting's name or availability do not change this diagram.

Check Which Setting Is Applied

Point to the Saved settings button:

  • Saved settings: name means the current supported Diagram Settings match that saved setting.
  • Saved settings: Custom means they do not exactly match any saved setting.

Open the list to see a check mark beside the matching saved setting.

Edge Cases and Expected Behavior

  • Selecting a saved setting that already matches the diagram may produce little or no visible change.
  • Applying a setting may cause the diagram to reconfigure as Entity and Relationship display choices change.
  • Changes apply only to the open diagram. Other diagrams are not updated.
  • Saving the current settings creates a new named setting. It does not overwrite an existing setting.
  • You cannot use the same name twice, even with different capitalisation.
  • Pressing Enter in the name field saves when the name is valid.
  • Selecting Cancel closes the window without creating a saved setting.

Troubleshooting (Q&A)

Save is unavailable

Enter a non-empty name. Names can contain up to 80 characters.

A setting with this name already exists

Choose a different name. If an old setting should be replaced, an Admin - Tenancy or Member - Group Admin can remove it using Managing Saved Diagram Settings, then save the current setup.

Saved settings are unavailable

The list could not be retrieved. Check your connection, close and reopen Settings, then try again.

Saved settings could not be applied

The diagram could not persist the applied values. Keep the diagram open, check your connection, and select the saved setting again.

My Entity positions did not move to match another diagram

Saved settings control display choices and overall Entity size and spacing. They do not copy manual positions or edited link routes. Use How to Change Diagram Layout or How to Manually Edit a Diagram for geometry changes.

Best Practice

  1. Configure the Diagram Settings that should be consistent across the organisation.
  2. Save them with a purpose-based name.
  3. Apply the setting to a diagram before manually arranging Entities or links.
  4. Wait for the applied confirmation before making further changes or leaving the diagram.
