How to Create Relationships Between Entities
This article explains how to create relationships between entities so that you can connect entities in a Group. There are three ways to create them, so you can work whichever way feels most natural.
Before You Start
Make sure you've already created at least two entities. Relationships connect existing entities, so they need to exist first.
Method 1: From an Entity's Page
This works well when you're already looking at a specific entity and want to add its relationships from there.
- Open the entity's page.
- Click Add Relationship.
- Select a Relationship Type from the dropdown.
- Select the Target Entity (or Target Entities).
- To add another relationship at the same time, click Add Another and repeat steps 3–4.
- Click Save.
Method 2: From the Relationship Register
The Relationship Register shows all relationships in your Group in one place. This method is handy when you want to add several relationships across different entities at once.
- Open the Relationship Register.
- In the Create New Relationship section, click From Entity and select the entity you want. You can type to search.
- Select a Relationship Type.
- Select the Target Entity (or Target Entities).
- To add another relationship at the same time, click Add Another and repeat steps 3–4.
- Click Save.
Method 3: By Drawing on the Diagram
If you're working on a diagram and want to add a relationship visually, you can draw it directly between two entities.
- Click on an entity on the diagram.
- Drag from one of the arrows on the edge of the entity to another entity.
- In the Inspector panel on the right, select a Relationship Type.
- Click Create.
What You'll See
Once a relationship is created, you'll see a confirmation: "Relationship created successfully."
The relationship appears in:
- The entity's page
- The Relationship Register
- Your diagrams — usually as an arrow between entities, though how relationships are displayed can be customised. See Understanding Diagram Settings for more detail.
It doesn't matter which method you used — the data updates everywhere automatically.
Tips
- Relationship types depend on the entity. The options available in the Relationship Type dropdown vary depending on which entity you've selected. See Understanding Validation Rules for more detail on which relationships are available for each entity type.
- Include historical data for accurate Snapshots. Where relevant, add date information when creating a relationship (for example, Appointment and Cessation dates for a director relationship). This ensures Snapshots can accurately display the structure as it existed at any point in time.
